Studebaker made what turned out to be a costly error as the 1953 Commander had a different wheelbase from the regular
European-looking coupe. The front end and the sloping rear were not easily converted to the smaller wheel base models. Trim
parts were not interchangeable. Two and four-door sedans were not as slick looking as the Champion Starliner. The exception
was the 1953 Studebaker Commander Land Cruiser which was built on the longer 120.5" wheelbase.
A badge was affixed to the side of the 1953 Commander indicating it had a V-8 engine. The price range for the 1953 Studebaker
line of cars went from $1735 to $2374. Some felt Studebaker kept the prices relatively low in order to get more sales so they
could meet the higher wages of its workers.
