In 1961, Sherwood Egbert became the President of Studebaker-Packard and personally conceived the idea of having a new exciting car that would bring in profits. Egbert was also responsible for
making face-lift changes to the 1962 Studebaker Lark so that it was more appealing. This time he wanted a car that would capture the imagination of the public and that it should be a streamlined
grand touring sports car. Named the Studebaker Avanti, it could perform as well as the Chevrolet Corvette with the available performance V-8 and, with further advancements, it went on to set speed
stock car records. Nevertheless, problems on the production line hampered sales and the Avanti became the last "new" model for Studebaker.
